It is critical that all cable boxes and DVR's remain plugged in to a power outlet/powered on surge protector in order to receive software updates. People have gone away on extended vacations, unplugging all of their cable equipment, only to come home to bricked equipment.
Your cable box/DVR, modem, and router are all specialized computers, and periodically need to call the "Mother Ship" (i.e Spectrum's main headend) to get updates. Typically Spectrum's maintenance and updates window is between 12AM-6AM and often on Tuesday mornings.
Additionally, cable boxes not activated by a service tech, that are picked up by a customer may need to be activated or pinned to a customer's account before they will fully work. They SHOULD begin activating within being plugged in, and this can take a good 20-30 minutes. If that does not activate the box, users should call Spectrum Customer Care to activate the box. They can also activate the boxes online through "My Account."
