The existing on screen closed caption options (via Settings, Captions, Analog/Digital) don't produce easily readable text. In the user manual there is supposed to be a User Setting Menu by turning off the box and hitting Menu on the remote within 1 second. When I do that, I get a different "Settings Menu" with only video, sound, and sleep options. I called Oceanic TWC support and the guy was unaware of the box menu, but after walking him through it, he was amazed to see that he had the User Menu I was looking for on his, but not on mine. I called Arris tech support, and they said the Service Providers build out the software, and may have deleted the submenu I was looking for. I called Oceanic TWC again, and was basically told I was out of luck. There is a fair amount of people complaining the existing captions are basically unreadable, even with the limited on-screen "options". According to the manual, missing options would include kerning options, such as proportional spacing, sharpening the text edges, etc., which i think would help. I otherwise LOVE the 3510M; the clarity is a huge improvement over the old box from a different manufacturer. I would hate to have to go back because I am having to squint to read the blurry text.
Hi!
Shoot! no longer have the Arris 3510 box. I now have a Cisco 9965 box. You are right, the CC text on the Arris is very hard to read. I don't remember the exact steps, but I know that you have to go under the captioning Option in settings.
In Captioning Options, you need to change to go under either Analog or Digital and one of them will say "Sort By Program" or "Sort By Viewer." You will need to change that to "Sort By Viewer" Text/mode of captioning should stay at CC-1.
Somewhere in "Sort by Viewer" there is a way to change the font. The font that I love on the Arris box is called "Impress." Find that font and select it and save it. I wish I could be more specific with the steps. The impress font looks great on an Arris box for Closed-Captioning!
Can a TWC mod please provide the steps to get to the "Impress Font? " I might have left something out. I should add that I tried this font on the Cisco box I now have, and it does not look the same at all. I have used the default Program Select for captioning on all the other boxes that I have except the Arris where I use the Impress Font. Yes, give us the exact steps, that should help us all!
