I would doubt that as well,
There are encrypted stations and different levels within divisions and even line-ups that would make this difficult. More cable companies are making it more difficult for customers to buy their own boxes and DTA. System upgrades can cause compatibility issues, and when you purchase your own boxes, you also don't know the quality of the vendor. Amazon and Ebay may have scams with regard to the get your own equipment. The products may be OK, but you just don't know.
If you purchase your own equipment, make sure you research the quality of the vendor, the dealer, and their return policy if there are issues. Or contact the provider renting the box to you, maybe you could work out a discount deal on box rental to keep the rate lower than the listed price. Than if there is a line-up change, or a system software update, you will know that the conversion has a better chance of success rather than, "Oh my warranty just expired on my DTA, or I can't get a return on my purchased Amazon/Ebay owned box."
