My DVR is hooked up to an old TV. After switching from an old Scientific Atlanta 8300 to an Arris DCX 3600, the mute and volume control functions no longer worked, either with my old UR5U-8400 Time Warner supplied remote or with the newer UR5U-8780L Time Warner supplied remote. The installer told me that the problem was my old TV.
About a month ago, I got a new DCX 3600 (due to an unrelated problem) and the mute and volume functions were once again accessible with my remotes. I performed no programming of the remotes or changes to the software settings, these fuctions just began to work. In addition, closed captions were back, a function that had disappeared years ago when swapping one SA8300 for another (due to an unrelated problem).
I'd like to know what caused the loss and return of these functions so that if it happens again the next time I have to change my set-top box I'll know what to do. Is it just that my first DCX 3600 and one of the SA 8300s were defective or is something else going on?
Thanks.
Greetings,
Did you purchase a new TV before you got that second Arris box? Was the old TV an SD model? This can affect functionality since all the boxes are now HD. You can change the settings on the boxes to SD only if you still have an SD set with an HD box. Feel free to contact us for the steps.
For future reference, if you purchase a new TV, you will need to program your remote to control the functions related to your TV. This includes:
The Volume Button
The Mute Button
The All Power Button
If you don't program your cable remote with the codes for your TV, and it's an HDMI cable set up, you will NOT be able to control the Mute or Volume functions, and the only thing that the All Power button will turn on and off is the cable box.
TWC has a page for programing your remote to work with your TV. Find your brand of remote and the instructions provided for it here:
http://www.timewarnercable.com/en/support/program-your-remote.html
You will need to program the Volume button and the All Power button. You may have to try all the TV set up codes to find the one that works. You should run the TV set up option after making sure you have fresh batteries in the remote, and the TV functions for some reason stop working.
Don't know why the new second Arris box solved your issue. Best guess is that your box had the codes for your TV and understood them right away. The boxes really should work with all the remotes. The only thing that's optional would be the DVR functions, which will only work if you have DVR service. You may also need to subscribe to a cable TV package to get the guide, or pay an ala carte fee for it. The guide is included with the typical Digital cable packages. You should count on the need to program your remote each time you get a new TV following the link above.
